Applying a high quality wrap system like PACTape is only the first step in corrosion protection. Without appropriate surface preparation the wrap may fail prematurely. For steel pipelines, valves or structural components, the substrate must be properly cleaned, degreased, and profiled to allow full adhesion and barrier continuity. WQ Trade emphasises this stage as a crucial foundation for reliable performance.
Remove oil, dirt, old coatings, rust scale and mill scale. Use suitable solvents or degreasers. Any residual contamination will undermine adhesion and invite corrosion beneath the wrap.
After cleaning, the steel surface should have an appropriate roughness to allow tape compound to bond and interlock. Methods such as wire brushing, abrasive blasting or power tools are often required depending on the condition.
The substrate must be dry and free from condensation or moisture. Tape applied to damp steel can trap water and lead to rust development under the barrier. Confirm dryness using suitable checks.
Ensure that ambient and substrate temperature allow for correct application. Very cold or very hot conditions may affect adhesion, flow of the petrolatum compound and wrap conformity. Plan your installation accordingly.
Prior to tape wrap, inspect the prepared surface for any remaining defects: pits, weld splatter, sharp edges or damage. Repair or smooth as needed. Use a checklist to verify readiness.
WQ Trade doesn’t stop at supplying high‑quality PACTape. They provide guidance from specification through to installation support. Their team helps ensure that your substrate is ready, your installation is robust and your infrastructure remains protected. With local manufacturing and service focus in Southern Africa, they deliver both product and process assurance.
“A tape system is only as effective as the surface it adheres to.”
